The signing of Fernando Torres from Athletico Madrid by Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez in 2007 has been hailed by many as the best ever signing by Benitez throughout his managerial career, and some would go as far as saying he has been one of Liverpool's best ever purchases.
At the time, Torres cost Liverpool just £20 million, with Livepool player Luis Garcia heading the opposite way as part of a swap deal. Madrid had just a few days previously announced the signing of ex-Man United striker Diego Forlan, who would go on to make an ideal replacement for Torres as he headed to Liverpool.
Rafael Benitez would have had many opportunities to monitor Torres during his own time as manager in Spain, and he obviously made a very educated decision when bringing Fernando to England. Since arriving at the club, torres has scred 50 goals in 72 games, averaging roughly 0.7 goals per game. This is an incredible return for a striker, especially one playing in a very difficult league, who isn't even a native to that country.
Since signing for Liverpool Torres has settled in incredibly quickly, and despite a few recent niggling injury problems his move from Atletico Madrid to Liverpool has been hailed as a massive success. Torres has been described my many as one of Liverpool's best ever strikers, and this is not something which comes lightly when you consider some of Liverpool's recent greats - Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler, etc.

The current Liverpool side has been built around their 2 greatest attacking players - Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, and it is impossible to imagine a side without either. Without Gerrard the side would lack its work rate, quick passing and pressing up the field, whilst without Torres there would be no target man, no player to hold the ball up for them, and crucially no-one to create goals for the Merseyside club.
If Fernando Torres was to leave the club, as has been rumoured due to Liverpool's reported financial problems and due to Torres' reported disappointed with the teams recent performances (which could mean that the club miss out on Champions League football), then they would have to spend a lot of money buying someone who is anywhere near the quality of Torres, and that could mean spending £40million plus, money that Livepool are unlikely to have anytime soon. Any sale of Torres could be used to refinance the club, and so it is unlikely that the owners will sanction a high priced replacement, at least not for a very long time.
